To Collectors — In this sale, my 48th, I offer the old collection of Mr.
P. D. Peterson of Eau Claire, Wis.., as well as several other splendid con-
signments and small collections. Most of the coins in the Peterson collec-
tion were purchased and collected over twenty years ago, and are very
desirable specimens. Mr. Peterson was a diligent and systematic collec-
tor. He was mostly interested in Scandinavian coins and those of the
United States. He still has a fine collection of relics and antiques, which
also is for sale.
In this sale you will find offerings that seldom appear. Therefore
buy them now while opportunity presents itself. Make your bids liberal
and I will do my utmost best for you. I think of the buyer’s purse as well
as the seller’s. Do not overlook the following: Early gold half eagles,
1824 quarter eagle, 18 36 dollar, Bryan money, Swedish Plate Money, C.S.A.
half dollar of 1861, Widow’s mites, Coin Holders, Old documents, Foreign
crowns and double crowns, U. S. Commemorative coins, Canadian coins.
Hard Times tokens, Paper Money, Rare foreign copper, Fine Ancient coins,
extensive series of United States coins, etc., etc.
Head Every Word in This Catalog or you are very apt to miss just what
you want.
Keep on my mailing list by sending bids, or if you find nothing to bia
on, request next list simply by a postal card. You will find a great varie-
ty of numismatic material in this sale, some choice and rare items, and
will be well paid for giving the contents of this sales list your careful
perusal.
The usual charge of 5% will be made for executing your bids, and for
packing and sending out material. No charge made on anything not
actually purchased. This fee is verv low for the superior service I expect
to give you.
Collectors of experience find that not all dealers classify coins alike.
My classifications and descriptions are based on knowledge gained
through 15 years of earnest dealing in coins. I have endeavored to re-
frain from over-rating the quality of a lot, which is so common. I believe
that the word “RARE” should not be over-worked.
Please remember my strong guarantee. If goods are not satisfactory
(you are to be the judge), you are at liberty to return them without any
danger of offending.
New bidders should send references or a deposit of at least 2 5 per
cent of bids.
Coins will be bought as much below your bids as possible, as this is
competitive bidding carried out in good faith.
If you do not know how much to bid on any item, write me and I
shall be glad to inform you as to its value.
Receipted bills are not sent after your remittance as this is un-
necessary. Your check, draft, or money order itelf is a receipt and we
ask you to pay only once. However, if a 2-cent stamp is enclosed we
will send receipt.
CONDITION OF COINS
The classifying of coins is an intricate and sometimes nerve-testing
effort. Even expert numismatists are disagreed on various points. In
my auction sales, it is my earnest purpose to give both buyer and seller
a square deal. It is quite natural and common for an owner to over-
rate the condition of his own coins, sometimes without realizing it. But
when a dealer sells a coin to a customer, he should place himself in the
customer’s place and abide by the golden rule. I want to have my cus-
tomers get what they expect, and try to represent everything fairly.
Therefore, I have adopted the following definitions of conditions of coins,
this feature being of the very highest importance in collecting. Please
make your bids according. And remember, that even in my auction sales
I guarantee absolute satisfaction in every way or your money will be
3
cheerfully refunded as well as any postage you have expended in return-
ing lots.
A coin in proof condition is one of that class which is prepared in the
mint particularly for numismatic purposes. This is the highest state
of condition imaginable and a coin in this condition has its maximum val-
ue. The planchet (bare piece of metal before struck) and dies are pol-
ished before the coin is struck (made) and this gives a burnished, mirror-
like, reflective surface. Never try to polish a coin. The only time this
could be done, is before it was made.
A coin in uncirculated condition is one that is in just the same state
or condition as when delivered from the mint. It must not be tarnished
or blackened, but must have a splendid general appearance. The coin
must be entirely desirable. Luster is usually abundant.
A coin in fine condition is one which shows to the naked eye no signs
of wear. They may have become tarnished or blackened, but seldom are.
As a matter of fact, a coin may have experienced considerable traveling
and yet be classified as fine if it has been luckily in good hands.
A coin in good condition must show every feature very plain. Coins
with part of the legend worn smooth are not good specimens.
A coin in fair condition is a piece which has been very considerably in
use, but upon which the most of the lettering, design, and date is clearly
readable. Moreover, the coin must be free from mutilation. If the sur-
face of the piece has been worn down so smoothly that the design, legends,
and date are not plain, or if there is a hole in it, or if it has been bent or
is corroded or otherwise damaged, then such a coin cannot be classed as
fair, as it is not as valuable.
J. W. Scott once said, “No two stamps if examined critically are
exactly alike.” I can say the same thing of coins. Therefore, it is nec-
essary to use intermediate conditions as follows:
Extremely fine — with not enough, original mint luster to be classed
as uncirculated.
Very fine — Fine, extra strong, well-struck, and desirable in general
appearances.
Very good — Everything very plain and showing very little wear on
any part. Just the highest parts of the coin are affected.
Very fair — Everything legible, but general appearance not worthy of
the classification “good.”
Other terms speak for themselves. Among these are poor, very poor,
holed, scratched, bent, nicked, mutilated, polished, cleaned, tarnished,
corroded, eroded, dented, rubbed, etc. These terms have the same mean-
ing in relation to coins that they have in other usage. See Webster’s
Dictionary.
It is nearly impossible to improve the numismatic condition of a
coin by any method, except in very rare cases, and then only at the hands
of an expert. By this I mean that if a piece is worn or scratched, it can
not be remedied by polishing. On the contrary, its condition may be low-
ered in degree.
WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY
On file in my office are one thousand signed testimonials, all unsolic-
ited; these may be inspected by visitors. Here are a few that were just
recently received:
“As usual I find the coins as represented in the catalog as to condi-
tion which is worth considerable to bidders.” From Pennsylvania.

ous of securing choice coins — for as you advertise, your coins come thru

tion of your square dealing and excellent values.”- — Ohio.

person knows just what they are.” — Illinois (from an experienced col-
lector) .

service rendered.” — Pennsylvania.
“Sale items received. I am so well pleased with the way you handled
my bids, that I hardly know how to express my thanks and appreciation.
Enclosed find my check of $42.09 to cover. I can hardly get this to you
quick enough, as I feel so happy and pleased.” — S. D.
Let me sell your collection or duplicates in these sales. Quick returns
and satisfactory results are realized. My sales are held regularly each
month. Write for terms.
PLEASE BID BY THE PIECE UNLESS STATED TO BID FOR THE LOT.
Thus if there are 12 pieces in a lot and you wish to pay $6.00 for the lot,
then bid 50 cents. At each sale someone bids by the lot. Don’t do this;
bid by the piece.

MUSEUM COLLECTION OF IlELIOS AND ANTIQUES FOR SALE
Anyone interested in purchasing a fine collection of relics and an-
tiques might do well to communicate with me.
ERRATA (Last Sale)
On page 2 7 in my February sale, the second 1799 dollar Haseltine 5
was listed at $65.00. This was a printer’s error, and it should have been
$6.00. Customers should make allowance for a few such errors.
DISCOVERY OF MORE ANCIENT GOLD
On the thirtieth of last January a workingman in Rome uncovered 378
pieces of ancient gold coins of the period of Emperors Claudius, Galba,
and Trajan. He sold them to the State for $800. They will be added
to the Capitol iu m Museum, and are regarded as a rare find. They have
been estimated to be worth $25,000, but this figure is perhaps high.
